Mountain of inspiration

Sibusiso Vilane made history by becoming the first black African to reach the peak of the world's highest mountain.

He is the first black African to have climbed Mount Everest twice from different approaches.

His inspiring story began when he met John Doble at the Malolotja Nature Reserve in Swaziland, where he worked as a game ranger. Completing the Seven Summits has been a three-year goal of his that includes a failed attempt to summit Denali in 2007.

On the day that he reached Mount Everest's peak for the first time, President Thabo Mbeki congratulated him on his achievement.

To the Top from Nowhere captures the mindset of a man who has beaten incredible odds and considers each day an opportunity to excel. His book addresses the equally daunting challenge of living in the aftermath of this experience.

It is not only highly informative but Vilane shares a wealth of information that could help budding mountaineers. Perhaps the most important are the lessons he has learnt from his failures.

You follow him while he goes from starting one venture after another and get a candid look at what he did right and wrong, and why this or that happened.

Recalling his biggest success he describes how not paying enough attention to detail can make you fail.

Vilane hopes his achievement will inspire young black South Africans.
