Mangosuthu University of Technology vice-chancellor Aaron "Mseshi" Ndlovu has been asked to step aside while an investigation relating to issues of "finance" and good governance at the university is conducted.

Ndlovu was served with a letter asking him to take compulsory leave on Friday. Allegations that Ndlovu had been suspended surfaced at the weekend.

When contacted by Sowetan yesterday Ndlovu confirmed he had been asked to take compulsory leave and directed further questions to university council chairman Obed Mlaba.

The provincial South African Students' Movement (Sadesmo) yesterday issued a statement welcoming Ndlovu's "suspension" from the university.

Mlaba said Ndlovu had not been suspended but was asked to "make space" to the outside delegation that had been appointed to investigate finances and governance at the university.

The statement issued by Sadesmo said Ndlovu had been suspended for his failure to comply with the employment equity act and failure to employ enough lecturers while there were 76 vacant posts as of July.

Sadesmo chairman at the university Brian Masondo welcomed the "suspension".
