Local female professional boxers are steadily staking their claim in the male-dominated sport.
Noni Tenge, Unathi Myekeni and Queen Tshabalala will show their male counterparts how it is done when they fight Mangalukeni Hamata, Diana Mabumbe and Joan Muzari at the Benoni City Hall on Sunday.
Tenge's opponent Hamata is from Namibia, Myekeni and Tshabalala's foes, Makumbe and Muzari, hail from Zimbabwe.
Tenge and Myekeni are both from East London, while Tshabalala hails from Gauteng.
Tenge and Myekeni made their professional debuts last August, while Tshabalala made her entry into the professional ranks last week.
Tenge fights in the welterweight division. She boasts four knockout wins from as many fights. Myekeni campaigns in the featherweight division where she has fashioned four wins (1 KO).
Tshabalala fights in the junior middleweight. She upset the applecart two weeks ago by defeating hot favourite Sandra Almeida in their four-rounder.
The first female professional tournament in SA was staged by promoter Rodney Berman, whose Golden Gloves presented the Women's International Boxing Association (Wiba) and Women's International Boxing Council (WIBC) light heavyweight title fights between holder Laila "She Bee Stingin"Ali and Gwendolyn "Stealth Bomber" O'Neil in February 3 last year.
The latter succumbed to Ali's power in 56 seconds. Nelson Mandela was among the luminaries who graced that event at Emperors Palace.
The tournament on August 31 will be staged by female promoter Mbali "Don Queen" Zantsi, who included a 10-rounder in the men's section.
Luyanda Jako and Takalane Dangala, the two principals, will fight for the vacant Gauteng provincial lightweight belt.
Meanwhile, Koos Sibiya will risk his second spot in the junior featherweight division when he fights Mbulelo Transvaal over six rounds.
