A 24-year-old Free State woman is expected to appear in the Frankfort magistrate's court today after her newborn baby was found dead in a stream last week.

Police spokesman Sergeant Philani Mvuna said yesterday that the woman from Namahadi township confessed that the child was hers but denied having killed it.

"She told us that she threw the baby into the stream because it did not cry after she gave birth on August 6," Mvuna said.

"This, she said, suggested to her that the baby was stillborn. She said she was alone when she gave birth."

He said the police discovered the body of the baby on Thursday after an unidentified man stopped a passing police vehicle and told them he had seen something that looked like a baby floating in the stream.

"Police immediately rushed to the scene and recovered the infant's body," Mvuna said. "It appeared to have head injuries. A postmortem will be conducted.

"She says the she and the father of the child had a one-night stand. She said the man had changed his contact numbers and she could no longer reach him,"

He said the woman would face a charge of murder.
