The police have arrested a woman after her lover died in a drunken brawl with her on Saturday night.

The woman, 26, was arrested in Pietermaritzburg yesterday and charged with murder.

Residents found the man's body yesterday morning in his home in the the Jika Joe settlement and reported it to the police.

Police spokesman Henry Budhram said the cops had established that the man had been drinking with his girlfriend on Saturday night.

"Both were under the influence of liquor," Budhram said.

He said further investigations had established that the drunk couple had had a fight and that the woman had killed the man, 26.

The accused cannot be named until she appears in court today.

The deceased may also not be named until his family have been located and notified.

In another incident, a 22-year-old thug was shot dead while he and four other suspects were fleeing in a vehicle after robbing a woman of her handbag and cellphone in Pietermaritzburg.

Budhram said the police had fired at the thugs' vehicle in an attempt to stop them getting away.

"Police arrested all five suspects, but discovered that one of them had been shot in the back of his head."

Budhram said the remaining four suspects, aged between 22 and 26, were charged with robbery and are expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg magistrate's court today.
