More than 40 people were arrested in a huge police operation in and around Polokwane at the weekend.
This follows the establishment of "Operation Booze", which is aimed at addressing anti-social behaviour among residents of the Limpopo capi tal.
Police spokesman Inspector Lesiba Ramoshaba said yesterday the operation was conducted throughout the night on Friday and Saturday and ended yesterday morning.
"The operation mostly targeted people who abuse alcohol and end up finding themselves on the wrong side of the law," Ramoshaba said.
He said they also arrested four owners of liquor outlets who were found to be flouting the Liquor Act.
"We have realised that many owners of liquor outlets sell beyond the stipulated time and we are committed to deal with them."
"There are rules that govern the selling of liquor in this country and rules are there to be obeyed. We also call upon communities to stop consuming liquor excessively."
Ramoshaba said some of those arrested were facing charges ranging from reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, rape, theft, assault and robbery to shoplifting.
They are being detained and are expected to appear in the Polokwane magistrate's court today.
"Some of the outlets sell liquor to minors and that in itself is a serious breach of the law," he said.
"Selling liquor to people who are already drunk is also not allowed because that might endanger their lives since it makes them vulnerable to attacks."
He said some liquor outlet owners were arrested for failing to produce their licences on demand. They had already paid their fines.
