A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Kameelrivier, near KwaMhlanga, for theft and false pretences.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Captain Leonard Hlathi said the man was arrested while asleep in the early hours of Friday morning. He allegedly robbed Paki- stani businessmen by pretending to be an official from the SA Reve nue Service (Sars) in Witbank.

"Since June he has been telling shop owners that he was registe- ring them for tax purposes and charged them between R500 and R1000 each," Hlathi said.

He allegedly told them he had been sent by Sars in Witbank to look for all businesspeople who had not registered with Sars.

Hlathi said it was thought the man had made off with more than R30000. He was due to appear in the Vaalbank magistrate's court today. - Sapa
