A veteran Pretoria police inspector has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for raping an awaiting-trial female prisoner who had been arrested for fraud.

Daniel Molokomme, 53, who worked for the SAPS for nearly 30 years, also got five years for pointing a firearm at his victim when he forced himself on her two years ago.

These sentences will run concurrently.

Molokomme was found guilty by the Pretoria North magistrate's court two weeks ago and was sentenced on Thursday.

After his arrest for the crime, Molokomme resigned from the police. He was working at the Pretoria Central magistrate's court as a court orderly.

Molokomme claimed that the complainant offered him sex as a favour after he took her from the holding cells to make a phone call in June 2005.

But the court argued that the woman asked Molokomme to help her use the outside phone because she trusted him.

The victim said Molokomme led her from the courtroom back to the cells and kept on touching her and she told him to stop.

Molokomme came to the cells at lunch time and pointed a firearm at her. He told her to undress, pushed her down on the cement floor and raped her.

The victim is suing Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula for R700000.
