Former SA No 1 amateur golfer George Coetzee this weekend won the SAA Pro-Am Invitational - his second victory as a professional in over a year at the Paarl Golf Club.

The 22-year-old player registered 207 nine-under par ahead of the experienced Warren Aberry and Doug McGuigan in soaking rain.

The youngster, who was in tip- top form, beat experienced Grant Muller, Jaco van Zyl and Bradford Vaughan, who all tied for fourth place, while world number 64 Richard Sterne settled for seventh with his final round 72.

"The questions just kept going and going through my head on the front nine," said Coetzee, who earned R79250 for his winning effort.

"After the birdie at the ninth, I told myself to concentrate on the job at hand. It was the only thing I could control and that calmed me down a lot."

The gap between Coetzee and his experienced challengers widened to two shots when both Aberry and McGuigan, who birdied 11 but dropped again at 12, dropped shots and the youngster rolled in a seven-footer for a birdie.

"I knew it was important to be patient over the last two holes," said Coetzee.

"That's where I nearly blew it the last time. I started thinking ahead about the closing holes and almost gave it away," he said
