We all share the shame

Poverty is the shame of our nation. And poverty, nothing else but poverty, drove a young mother to stab to death her nine-day-old daughter 24 hours after her sickly 14-month-old son had died.

Poverty is the shame of our nation. And poverty, nothing else but poverty, drove a young mother to stab to death her nine-day-old daughter 24 hours after her sickly 14-month-old son had died.

She felt there was no one to turn to, no one sensed her distress. And no one realised that her sense of dignity was also gone because she could not feed her children.

She was the last hope for her hungry babies.

She quit her job as a maid to nurse her sickly 14-month-old baby. All she could feed the babies was her presence and motherly attachment.

Today, she is probably branded a criminal. We say it is a shame, a shame on all able-bodied and thinking South Africans that this could happen.

We hope politicians and social workers are listening.
