Mahlangu said this after the Mpumalanga department of social services and health donated food parcels and school uniforms to the needy children of Emalahleni.
Other recipients who were handed the much- needed food echoed Mahlangu's words.
More than 400 food parcels and 200 school uniforms have been donated to the poor in the province since the departmental campaign "Duduli'ndlala" was launched last month.
Food parcels handed out by the department include mealie meal and washing powder.
MEC Fish Mahlalela said his department was experiencing the effects of the sharp rise in the cost of living, which is impacting mostly on the poor.
"We have put in place measures that will ease the burden of these economic shocks," said Mahlalela.
He said his department, together with the national Department of Social Development through South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), had raised a total of R10,5million to provide assistance in easing the affordability of food to distressed families.
Mahlalela said the primary aspect of Sassa's work was to reduce the existing backlog of children in need of foster care placement and the payment of appropriate grants.
"We need to encourage all our people to provide care to the orphaned and the less privileged children in our communities," he said.
