August is Organ Donor Month. This means that the Organ Donor Foundation aims to increase public awareness about organ donations.

Executive director of the foundation, Philippa Douglas, said: "This month we have two tribute days where we invite people who donated organs to remember their loved ones.

"We also have to educate schoolchildren about donating organs. Donating organs is a relatively new concept. It only started in 1967. We have a lot of cultural and religious challenges. We need to raise awareness and educate the public."

Douglas said there were two types of organ donors - heart beating and non-heart beating.

"If you are a heart-beating donor, you can donate tissues and a kidney. People who are brain dead also fall into this category. If you are a non-heart beating donor you can only donate tissue."
