Sabelo Phumelele Teddy Neku was born on September 25 in Carltonville.
He was the second son of Nontsikelelo Kabane and Edward "Fish" Neku. He began his education in Soweto and moved on to the Pholela Institute and Ohlange High School, where he obtained his matric.
During this time he became enamoured of Steve Biko's philosophy, which signalled a turning point in his life.
Neku was arrested in 1976 and charged with transporting arms from Swaziland. He was freed in November that year.
He went to Swaziland and worked at the Underground nightclub until his return in 1981. But after being harassed by the police he skipped the country in 1982.
Neku obtained a scholarship to study health sciences at the University of San Francisco. He moved to New York, where he met his wife Nonhlanhla Neku and they were married in 1991. They had two children, Zenzile Phumelele and Lumka Vuyokazi.
Neku graduated in urban studies from the the University of Columbia. The family came back to South Africa in 1997.
He is survived by his wife, children and mother and will be buried on Saturday at Avalon Cemetery. The funeral service will be held at the Community Hall, Ext 1, Olympus Road, Ennerdale.
