Limpopo's self-confessed serial killer, Mukosi Freddy Mulaudzi, yesterday dismissed as "nothing" the 11 life sentences and 146 years he will serve behind bars.
Mulaudzi, 45, was sentenced by Judge Godfrey Hetisani in the Thohoyandou high court.
He was found guilty on 26 charges including murder, attempted murder, rape, robbery and theft.
An unrepentant Mulaudzi said: "It's nothing."
He committed the crimes between 2004 and 2006 after he allegedly escaped from the Baviaanspoort Prison in Gauteng in 1999, where he was serving two life terms for murder and robbery.
Judge Hetisani rejected Mulaudzi's legal counsel James Manwadu's plea for mitigation on the grounds that Mulaudzi could still be rehabilitated.
He said Mulaudzi had continued his crime spree even after his escape from prison.
"Where is justice going to take place?" he asked.
Mulaudzi wanted the court to accept, as an excuse, that he was raised by a polygamist father who failed him, leading him to commit the killings.
"I doubt that rehabilitation is possible and not all people are correctable," Hetisani said. "I agree with the state that Mulaudzi is a merciless and ruthless person who does not want to change."
He said Mulaudzi targeted women and children, raped and killed them for reasons had not bothered to tell the court.
Hetisani also said Mulaudzi's modus operandi was aimed at enriching himself with property belonging to his victims.
According to Hetisani Mulaudzi made a habit of targeting women. He hardly ever attacked a man, said the judge.
"It is the duty of the justice system to protect those who cannot defend themselves from merciless people like you," the judge said.
Mulaudzi's first crimes were in 1985 at the age of 21, when he raped and murdered people in Makhado.
