Khotso Mokoena's achievement in winning the first medal for South Africa at the Beijing Olympics has made all of us proud.

It is even more exciting that he did not just get a medal but a silver medal. It is also exciting that he hails from Ekurhuleni. He became focused when everyone had lost hope of South Africa ever getting a single medal 10 days after the games had started.

Khotso did it without a professional trainer. He relied on the community support which saw the AfriSun Community Trust donating R150000 to his school to purchase athletics equipment.

When Khotso was about to fly to Beijing, it was the very same trust that donated R10000 to make his stay in Beijing conducive to focus on his preparations.

We as the community of Ekurhuleni in particular and the people of Gauteng and the country in general say Halala Khotso! We are proud of you. In you we see a champion who will be a role model to all the young people in our country who have lost hope.

You demonstrated that it is not through what you have or where you come from, but that it is about commitment, perseverance, discipline and hard work that heroes of your calibre emerge and excel.

You are an ambassador for the general transformation of sports in our country.
