Doctor Khumalo, former Bafana Bafana midfielder, has showered the 2 400 workers on site at Soccer City with praises for helping to refurbish the venue into a world-class facility.
Khumalo was one of the three 2010 World Cup ambassadors at Soccer City on Friday to celebrate one million injury-free hours on site.
Soccer City, which is almost halfway through its upgrade, will host both the opening and closing ceremonies of the World Cup.
Other ambassadors present were Mark Fish and Phil "Chippa" Masinga, who were joined by another ex-Bafana Bafana player, Shaun Bartlett.
"You guys are doing an awesome job, we are all proud of the job you are doing to turn Soccer City into a world-class stadium," said the popular Khumalo.
He said his best memory of Soccer City was in 1996 when Bafana Bafana played against Brazil.
"I will never forget that game where I scored two goals, only to be replaced in the second half, allowing Brazil to get three goals," said Khumalo.
For Masinga, "it was when we [Jomo Cosmos] played against [Kaizer] Chiefs and I scored three goals in one of the competitions. The one, which of course is still remembered by many people, was when I scored the historic goal that sent Bafana Bafana to the 1998 World Cup finals in France."
Bartlett said "my memories of the old Soccer City was when I scored the last goal in the [last] Soweto derby [at the venue]".
Fish used the opportunity to urge South Africans to rally behind Bafana Bafana.
Danny Jordaan, the LOC's chief executive, also praised the Soccer City workers for a job well done to date. Jordaan promised each worker a ticket to watch a World Cup match at the venue.
