A township resident who apparently thought he could make a fast buck - by claiming his home had been robbed - has been charged with perjury.
Jabulani Ngwenya, 41, of KaNyamazane township, outside Nelspruit, opened a case at his local police station claiming that his house had been broken into last week.
Police went to his home to investigate the "housebreaking" only to find that there were no signs of a break-in. Family members they spoke to knew nothing about it.
"We then interrogated Ngwenya, who confessed he had opened the case to defraud his insurance firm," KaNyamazane police spokesman Captain Phillip Fakude said.
"He wanted to claim that his DVD player and cash had been stolen."
Ngwenya was not asked to plead to the perjury charge and was remanded in custody pending his next court date on September 4.
