The South African Local Government Association's national executive committee will meet to deliberate on the ever-changing socio-political landscape.
It will also discuss the recent spate of attacks on South African and foreign nationals.
Councillors will convene at an NEC annual meeting in East London, Eastern Cape, today, to analyse service delivery challenges facing municipalities.
One of the objectives of the meeting is to provide strategic direction to the association (Salga) regarding progress made since last year.
It will also assess policy developments and challenges in local government and how Salga should position itself ahead of next year's general elections.
Salga spokesman Mogomotsi Mogodiri said the national executive will analyse the current political landscape leading up to the national and provincial elections.
"Among other things that will be discussed is the impact thereof on municipalities and Salga's role therein, considering proposals on how Salga should strengthen its role as the voice of municipalities and assessing the functionality of Salga's internal governance arrangements."
The meeting will be addressed by a number of speakers including Provincial and Local Government Minister Sydney Mufamadi, Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke, Eastern Cape local government MEC Thokozile Xasa, Auditor General Terrence Nombembe and chairman of the municipal demarcation board Vuyo Mlokoti.
Mogodiri said the meeting will also take stock of the progress made since the last one held in 2007.
"The three-day lekgotla will also consider what needs to be done to consolidate the gains made, delivering quality support to member municipalities and identifying interventions that will ensure that service delivery is accelerated in the context of the five-year local government strategic agenda," he said.
He said the meeting will also discuss escalating food, fuel and electricity prices.
"The review of the local government White Paper, the provincialisation of health services and the energy crisis are other issues that face us daily. These have a direct bearing on local government operations.
"It goes without saying that the lekgotla will have to reflect on them, to come up with strategies to mitigate their impact on our sector," Mogodiri said.
