The police and authorities in Mtubatuba, northern Zululand, have called the warring Mkhwanazi clan to a special meeting to halt faction fighting that has resulted in a spate of shootings in the area.

It is believed the fight is related to the chieftainship dispute after the death of Inkosi Minus Mkhwanazi last year. Mkhwanazi died of natural causes and no one has replaced him.

Mtubatuba police spokesman Captain Jabulani Mdletshe described the situation as tense.

He said three weeks ago, two people were gunned down by unknown assailants.

"Thirteen-year-old Mlungisi Masuku was killed while coming from a traditional ceremony with his parents," Mdletshe said. "And 31-year-old Philemon Mchunu was also attacked coming from the same ceremony."
