The Independent Electoral Commission in KwaZulu-Natal says it is concerned about the recent assassination of ANC and the IFP leaders in the province.
This after the killing of ANC Abaqulusi municipality councillor Alpheus Xulu, who was found dead with a male friend on Thursday, and the gunning down of IFP chairman Bhekisisa Mthethwa at the Jacobs Hostel.
Mthethwa was ambushed on Saturday morning on his way to work. This was followed by the killing of ANC supporter Wanda Phelakho just after the launch of the party's provincial election campaign.
Police have so far been unable to establish whether Mthethwa and Phelakho's murders were linked.
Provincial IEC chairman Mawethu Mosery said yesterday he hoped the police would help the commission determine whether the killings were politically motivated.
"We are obviously concerned about the motive for these killings," he said.
