Families rendered homeless by a mysterious fire that destroyed about 15 shacks in New Pietersburg, outside Polokwane in Limpopo, have started rebuilding them.

The affected families braved the cold weather and started in earnest to rebuild their shacks in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The fire destroyed the shacks on Sunday.

The Polokwane municipality has dispatched officials to inspect the extent of the damage.

Municipal spokesman Simon Mokwatedi said they would assist the families.

He said some affected families had already left the area to seek accommodation elsewhere, while those who had no alternative were forced to stay and rebuild their shacks.

A man was allegedly found dead in a burnt-out shack.

Police Inspector Lesiba Ramoshaba identified the deceased as July John Skhosana, from KwaNdebele.

By noon yesterday police had not yet established the exact cause of the fire.

Residents speculated about who or what could have started the fire.
