The police arrested seven women and a man after they were found transporting guns in a coffin.

Police said when they stopped a minibus taxi in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni, they discovered that the driver did not have a permit to transport "the expensive coffin", presumed to be carrying a corpse.

The minibus was allegedly on its way to KwaZulu-Natal.

The driver allegedly told police that he had forgotten the permit at a mortuary.

"One of the women became hysterical when police ordered the driver to open the coffin.

"On opening the coffin we discovered seven pistols and an AK-47 inside - and no corpse," police spokesman Constable Thabiso Ledwaba said.

The women and men were all charged with illegal possession of firearms. Ledwaba said they would appear in court soon.

He said the police were conducting further investigations to determine where the guns originated from.
