It is not surprising that Botswana's leaders have declared publicly that they do not recognise Robert Mugabe as a legitimate president of Zimbabwe.

It is not surprising that Botswana's leaders have declared publicly that they do not recognise Robert Mugabe as a legitimate president of Zimbabwe.

Their objection to Zimbabwe's participation in Southern African Development Community activities was expected.

Botswana was the state agent of the US and during the height of the struggle in South Africa that country collaborated with the apartheid regime to arrest freedom fighters who were shuttling between that country and SA.

The Botswana authorities supplied the apartheid regime with the lists of names of freedom fighters from the Azanian People's Liberation Army and Umkhonto we Sizwe.

The US had a military base in Botswana.

It is unfortunate that with the current political turmoil caused by imperialists in Zimbabwe, Botswana sees a chance of intimidating its neighbours to appease Britain and the US.

It is hoping for special recognition and an economic payback from the imperialists.

This attitude is a ploy to trigger a military confrontation with Zimbabwe so that the US and Britain can have an excuse to invade Zimbabwe and depose Mugabe.

The patriots of Africa are watching the political developments in Zimbabwe and Mugabe must be honoured as a great African leader who has proved himself to be the defier of the imperialists.
