Kwaito king Arthur Mafokate has ditched the country's most popular genre for house music in a bid to revive his floundering career.
This after talk that he is struggling to make a living out of the music genre he founded - lending credence to claims that kwaito is dying.
The sudden switch to house is unlikely to go down well with the fans he amassed from almost 20 years of producing kwaito.
Mafokate, who owns 999 Records, reluctantly confessed yesterday that he is now channeling his energy into producing house music.
"I am out of kwaito until we figure out how to make it better. I feel things are changing. There is a high demand for house [music] and I am going along with the market.
"I predicted in 1998 that kwaito was going to struggle and people didn't believe me. Now it's happening," he said.
Mafokate's change of heart became evident in his latest album, Arthur vs DJ Mbuso which contains 90percent house music.
Sowetan can also reveal that Mafokate, who was criticised for "stealing" DJ Cleo's song last year, has been secretly working on another house album that is due for release next Friday.
It is likely to cause another uproar because some of the songs on the upcoming album are said to resemble some of DJ Cleo tunes.
