Former athlete Sydney Maree, 52, has been sentenced to an effective five years in jail for fraud involving R900000.

Former athlete Sydney Maree, 52, has been sentenced to an effective five years in jail for fraud involving R900000.

The SABC reported yesterday that the former middle-distance runner, who competed for SA and the US, was convicted in the Pretoria specialised commercial crime court on two counts of fraud - for transferring money from the National Empowerment Fund to his personal bank account.

Maree was acting chief executive of the NEF from September 2003 until his suspension in June 2004.

"It is tragic that a man of his stature has fallen from grace," magistrate Desmond Nair said in passing sentence.

He was granted leave to appeal and his bail of R20000 was extended. He is married and has five children.
