Choral music lovers should diarize November 9 for the yearly Transnet Foundation, SABC and Sowetan Massed Choir Festival.

Make sure your are at the Standard Bank Arena in Doornfontein, Johannesburg, at 2pm.

Twenty choirs, forming a choir of 1000 voices, will sing with the soloists mezzo soprano Nonhlanhla Yende, bass Timothy Matlala, soprano Pretty Yende and tenor Monwabisi Lindi and a guest artist.

The choirs are Bonisidumo Choristers, East Rand Chorale, Kathorus Choristers, Mogale City Chorale, Soweto Songsters, Vaal Choristers, African Sweet Melodies, Gauteng SABS Choir, Gauteng Choristers, SABC Choir, Amazwi KaNtu Choir, Garankuwa Community Choir, Mamelodi Philharmonic Chorus, Shalom Chorale, Free State Choir, Mvezo Community Choir from Eastern Cape, Manzini Symphony Chorus from Swaziland, Papaya Choir from Denmark, Chitungwiza Harmony Choir from Zimbabwe and the SA Singers.

The festival also pays tribute to composers who contributed to the growth of local choral music.

They include Mosoeu Moerane, Enoch Sontonga, Theriso Tsambo and Jabulani Mazibuko.

This festival is a deserving home for budding composers, arrangers, conductors and choristers.

This year a choral music composition by a young musician will be among the highlights.

In April the South African Music Rights Organisation, Endowment for the National Arts and organisers - Transnet Foundation, SABC and Sowetan - called on emerging choral music composers to enter their work for a commemorative choral composition competition.
