A 30-year-old man was shot dead by police as a gang of five gunmen attempted to rob a cash-in-transit van in Sandringham, Johannesburg, yesterday, Gauteng police said.

Inspector Moses Maphakela said security guards from a cash-in-transit company stopped at a garage to collect money. When they walked towards the garage safe, they were approached by five armed men, all wearing blue overalls.

The guards opened fire on the armed men who then scattered. Police patrolling the area saw the incident and approached the gunmen, who opened fire on the officers.

The police returned fire, wounding a man who died at the scene. Police recovered a 9mm pistol from his body. The other four men got into their car and fled. - Sapa
