A laundry worker at Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto was arrested after she was found in possession of 12 human placentas.

Police spokesman Captain Phephi Matlou said security guards at the hospital found the placentas after they searched the 45-year-old woman's belongings as required. They then called the police.

"When questioned about the placentas, she said she found them in a refuse bin in the maternity ward and that she was going to give them to her inyanga to heal her TB," Matlou said.

The placentas are being stored in a mortuary, she said.

Matlou said the woman was charged with illegal possession of human body parts and will appear in court today.
