More police officers have been deployed to Esikhawini, outside Richards Bay, after buses were shot at.

KwaZulu-Natal transport department spokesman Nonkululeko Mbatha said yesterday: "The buses were severely damaged, but our team has gone there for a meeting and enforcement will be stepped up."

Occupants of a car reportedly fired at the buses on Tuesday. Nobody was injured.

Meanwhile, MEC for safety and liaison, Bheki Cele, called an urgent press briefing in Cato Manor yesterday over violence between two rival taxi associations.

Cele had threatened to disband the rival Cato Manor and Chesterville taxi associations if the conflict did not stop.

On Tuesday, gunmen shot at a taxi driver from the Chesterville taxi rank. As he attempted to flee in his vehicle, he crashed into a house.

Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said the driver was not injured. No arrests have been made. - Sapa
