A third officer involved in a head-on collision between a SAPS vehicle and a private car carrying other policemen to work, has died.

Two officers died and four were injured on the N11 near Pepworth when a police vehicle collided with a Golf in which their colleagues were travelling to Bergville on Sunday.

The deceased are Sergeant Velemseni Mfaba, 35, Bonginkosi Gwala, 43, and Nkosikhona Mthembu, 36, who were on their way to work when the accident happened.

They were all based at the Madadeni crime prevention unit but had recently been deployed to the Bergville area.

Police spokesman Charmaine Struwig said Mfaba died in hospital on Tuesday.

"The other officers are still nursing injuries.

"It's a very sad moment for the unit," she said.
