Mpumalanga MEC for health and social services, Fish Mahlalela, has challenged the youth to seize opportunities that his department is offering and rise out of poverty, disease and underdevelopment.

Mahlalela was speaking at the International Youth Day event in Emalahleni yesterday.

He said his department had worked hard to avail opportunities for the youth in the province, such as giving bursaries to more than 320 students to study social work and community development; recruiting 200 youths to study as auxiliary social workers, and is now recruiting 347 youth for the Masupa Tsela Youth Pioneer programme.

International Youth Day gives the world an opportunity to recognise the potential of youth, to celebrate their achievements, and to plan for ways to better engage young people to successfully take action in the development of their societies.
