Municipal official off the hook again

The Limpopo councillor who was being sought in connection with a housebreaking case is off the hook again.

The case involving the Makhado municipal councillor, whose name may not be published, was withdrawn in the Louis Trichardt magistrate's court yesterday.

He was originally wanted in connection with an incident which allegedly took place in February 2001 when a hair salon and shop were broken into. The councillor was allegedly linked to the crime by fingerprints taken from the burgled shops.

The case was twice withdrawn from the court roll and reinstated at the insistence of the complainants. It was first withdrawn after the first complainant died but reinstated this year after the second complainant lodged a complaint forwarded to the Director for Public Prosecutions (DPP) for a decision.

It was reinstated last month after the DPP ruled the matter must be heard in court.

Court officials at Louis Trichardt were not available to explain why the case had been withdrawn again, despite the ruling of the DPP.

Police spokesman Captain Ndwamato Vele confirmed that the case had been withdrawn.
