Man offers woman lift, job, then rapes her
An unemployed woman is traumatised after a man who had promised her a job raped her at a parking lot in Durban on Women's Day.
The woman, who cannot be named to protect her identity, was waiting for a taxi to the Durban city centre from the Wheel Shopping Centre at about 7pm when an unknown man in a black VW Citi Golf pulled over and offered her a lift.
He was friendly to her and promised to change her life for the better when he offered her a job at an advertising company he claimed he owned in town.
On their way to the city, the man allegedly asked her for sex. He then pulled up her skirt and caressed her thighs.
Police spokesman Thembeka Mbhele said, according to the victim, she asked him to stop but he ignored her.
"The victim says that the man promised her a job at his advertising company and told her she had to fill in an application form at his offices," said Mbhele.
The suspect drove to a block of flats in John Ross where he allegedly pulled out a gun and forced himself on her repeatedly in the parking lot.
The woman told police that the man raped her without using a condom.
Once he was done, he drove her back to the shopping centre and left her there.
The traumatised woman reported the case at the Point Road police station.
Mbhele said yesterday the family violence and child abuse unit was investigating the case.
She issued a warning to women not to accept lifts from strangers .
"Women should be very careful of strange men asking for favours in exchange for employment," she said.
