Platinum Stars successfully defended the SuperSport Under-19 Cup title when they beat Soweto Select XI 2-1 in an entertaining encounter in Soweto at the weekend.

The final was well-balanced throughout and was watched by an enthusiastic crowd who were kept on their toes by the excellent display dished out by the finalists.

Stars, coached by former Moroka Swallows utility player Les Grobler, grabbed an eighth-minute goal through captain Caldrin Coetzee from the penalty spot.

Striker Tony Patricio equalised for the Soweto lads in the 20th minute but Stars striker Thabang Jenekwane dashed their hopes when he scored the all-important goal two minutes before the break. The nuggety Coetzee capped his excellent form when he grabbed the player of the tournament award.

The North West outfit won an overseas trip to the place of their choice.

The Select XI did not go home empty-handed from this prestigious event as their goalkeeper Jeffrey Hlabana walked away with the goalkeeper of the tournament award.

The Soweto side, who were co-sponsored by the Sowetan and adidas, left an indelible mark on the tournament.

In the group stages they beat the well-organised and fearsome teams including Kaizer Chiefs, Thanda Royal Zulu and School of Excellence, and drew 1-1 against a Nigerian team.
