Van der Burgh falters in semis

BEIJING - Cameron van der Burgh, who on Saturday night became the eighth fastest 100m breaststroke swimmer in the world and the first African to break one minute with a time of 59.96 seconds, was unable to maintain the momentum into yesterday 's semi-final.

Van der Burgh finished fifth in his heat behind Norway's Dale Oen who won in 59.16 seconds, reducing his own record time by a further 0.25 seconds.

"I was so excited last night that I only got to bed at 1am and had to get up at 6am," said the 20-year-old who has his sights set on London 2010. - Sapa
