A teenage boy, rated as the best among locals in the game of pool, was allegedly stabbed to death by a jealous opponent in Standerton, Mpumalanga.
Richard Zulu, 18, of Sakhile township was playing snooker with patrons at a local tavern on Saturday when he was fatally stabbed during an argument.
The incident occurred at Ebafaneni Tavern in Extension 6 on Saturday morning, according to police.
Superintendent Abie Khoabane, pictured, of the Mpumalanga provincial police said the victim, who was a well-known pool player, is reported to have won against his opponent at about 5.45am.
"An argument started between the two and the tavern owner ordered all the patrons to leave," Khoabane said. "Once outside the tavern the defeated opponent allegedly attacked Zulu with a knife and stabbed him once in the chest."
He said the teenager tried to run back to the tavern but collapsed and died with his attacker after him.
"His attacker allegedly hijacked a vehicle at the scene and fled," Khoabane said. "He lost control of the bakkie in Extension 7 and it overturned.
"He jumped out and fled on foot."
Khoabane said members of the local dog unit had meanwhile responded to a hijacking alert and managed to arrest him along the Standerton-Pretoria Road as he tried flee to Pretoria.
Khoabane said the man would appear in court on murder and hijacking charges.
