While some women in South Africa celebrated Women's Day a dispute and heavy winds forced the main KwaZulu-Natal event to be cancelled.

The event was coordinated by the provincial government and was to be held at the KwaMaqhwakazi Primary School sports field in Eshowe.

The Women's Day celebration was intended to honour Queen Nandi, King Shaka's mother.

The event was planned to be held a few kilometres from Nandi's grave on Saturday.

The provincial government says a strong wind that blew the marquee down was the reason for the postponement.

But claims of inappropriate consultation with Nandi's descendants in the Zulu royal family have surfaced.

A source said despite the marquee being blown away, the provincial government wanted to go ahead with the event without respecting the wishes of Nandi's family.

She said the event had not received the blessing of the ancestors.
