Families of South African Defence Force (SADF) soldiers who died between 1966 and 1994 during the fierce bush war met at Freedom Park in Pretoria on Saturday.

The SADF soldiers were largely at war with former liberation armies, MK and Apla, and soldiers from neighbouring countries whose governments supported the struggle.

According to the coordinator of the function, Samantha Swart, details of SADF soldiers who were killed have not been finalised.

"The number of soldiers who died is estimated at 3000," said Swart.

She said about 200 families attended the event and were comforted about their loss.

Swart said a book in memory of the late soldiers was launched and would be kept at Freedom Park.
