The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) is investigating 16 cases against Orlando police after complaints of police brutality were reported to the police watchdog.
"The investigation is progressing well and the ICD still needs to obtain vital information that is still outstanding," spokesman Dikeledi Phiri said.
The complaints emanate from an incident on May 31 where police allegedly shot and assaulted people after a funeral in Orlando East.
One of the victims, Thabo Manxiweni, said he went to hospital after police shot him in the arm and buttocks.
He said he spent more than two weeks at Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital where he was treated. He said residents had opened a case against the police while he was in hospital, but he had not received any report from the police.
Thabang Nxumalo, who said he was with Manxiweni when the incident happened, said: "I was standing with Thabo in the street outside his home when the policemen, some in civilian clothes and others in uniform, just shot at him without uttering a word. They proceeded to the yard where they shot and assaulted seven more people. It seems they knew who they were looking for because they did not shoot randomly."
He said police picked him up the next day and accused him of possessing an illegal firearm.
