Police in Mpumalanga are baffled by the deaths of a couple whose bodies were found about a kilometre apart.
The bodies of Jabulani Simelane, 38, and Thembisile Nkambule, 35, both of Eziphunzini Section in Piet Retief, were found with bullet wounds to the head on Thursday.
Police suspect the killings occurred on Wednesday night. The couple had a seven-year-old son.
Superintendent Abie Khoabane of the Mpumalanga provincial police said it was not yet clear whether the man killed his wife at home and then committed suicide elsewhere or if they were attacked while sleeping.
"The attacker[s] might have shot the woman twice in the head while she was covered with a blanket, taken the man away with them and then killed him too," said Khoabane.
Simelane's body was found in the grass along the Piet Retief- Wakkerstroom road on Thursday morning.
"Police received a call at about 7.30am from a passerby who saw the body a few metres from the road. There were no signs of a struggle. At about 4pm that day police found the body of Nkambule in their bed at home.
"She had two bullet wounds to the head and the blanket covering her also had a bullet hole in it."
He said there were no signs of a struggle at the house. The neighbours and the couple's son did not hear any gunshots even though the houses are built close to each other.
According to Khoabane, the boy woke up on Thursday morning and went to wake his mother up so that she could prepare him for school as usual.
"When she did not wake up he left her, thinking that she was still sleeping. He got dressed and went to school," he said.
He appealed to anyone with informationto contact the nearest police station or call SAPS Crime Stop 08600-10111 at all hours.
