The Lions roared to a close 30-27 victory over the Bulls in an exciting Absa Currie Cup game at Loftus on Friday night.

It was sweet revenge for the Doornfontein side who were embarrassed 21-7 by the Pretoria outfit in the first round at Ellis Park Stadium in June.

At the same time, it was a great achievement for coach Eugene Eloff and his charges who brought the Bulls unbeaten record on home soil to an abrupt end.

They also knocked the hosts from the top spot to fourth on the log while the Ellis Park boys moved from fourth to third place.

From the onset, the game was physical and both sides did not show any respect for each other.

As the game progressed, the visitors took control and led 30-13 at the break with their hooker Willie Wepener putting on a splendid showing.

He capped his performance when he scored two tries and was voted man of the match.

The Bulls kept fighting back towards the end of the second half after trailing 30-27.

But the Lions' pack showed their strength and kept their marauding forwards at bay.

In other games, Western Province's unimpressive form continued when they lost 32-10 to the Sharks in Newlands on the same day.

Defending champions, Cheetahs made mince meat out of the Griquas who they thumped 22-3 in Bloemfontein while the Kavaliers pipped the Falcons 31-29 in Boland.
