Downs make it
Mamelodi Sundowns scored a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Free State Stars in the quarterfinals of the MTN 8 Knockout at Super Stadium yesterday.
The goal was scored by Katlego Mphela in the 107th minute of extra time after both sides were level at 0-0 at full time.
The first half was a dull affair with both sides not doing well enough to entertain an estimated crowd of about 4 000.
Even the presence of Bafana Bafana coach, Joel Santana and his assistant Pitso Mosimane, could not inspire the two sides as they continued struggling to break the stalemate until the break.
Early in the opening minutes of the game Sundowns midfielder Benedict Vilakazi saw his shot bounce off Stars goalkeeper's chest Kennedy Mwene, but teammate Katlego Mphela failed to capitalise on that rebound in the sixth minute.
Five minutes later Ea Lla Koto almost took the lead when Matome Madimabe saw Sundowns 'keeper Brian Baloyi off his line but his shot hit the cross bar.
Sundowns' combination of Vilakazi, Mphela and Lerato Chabangu was a constant threat to the Stars defence, but they failed to score.
Vilakazi, who was Sundowns live-wire, made his presence felt with his tight marking and dangerous runs towards their opponents' goals.
The Free State lads had their scoring opportunity as the game progressed but found it hard to penetrate Sundowns' rear guard manned by Siboniso Gaxa.
In the 39th minute, Stars Diyo Sibisi cleverly outclassed Sundowns defender Vuyo Mere just outside the box but his attempt went astray with Baloyi out of sight.
