KwaZulu-Natal's women MECs will throw the mother of all feasts to cele- brate King Goodwill Zwelithini's birthday today.

In an effort to be gender sensitive during women's month, the provincial government has tasked the three women MECs to organise the celebrations, which will be held at the Chief Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.

The MECs are Weziwe Thusi, arts, culture and tourism, Ina Cronje, education, and Lydia Johnson, public works.

King Zwelithini marked his 60th birthday last month at an event attended by dignitaries and royalty from Swaziland, Ghana, Germany and Switzerland.

The significance of the event is to recognise the part played by the Zulu king in promoting women's rights and opposing abuse.

Vukani Mbhele of the arts, culture and tourism department said the celebrations were to honour the king for his role in building the province.
