They do an extensive job and contribute to the upliftment of their communities - and it has paid off.

Four organisations from Gauteng and North West were honoured for their outstanding work at Jet stores in Southgate, Johannesburg, this week.

The awards recognise community projects and the regional winners all received R15000.

The winners are the Happy Day Creche in Jouberton, North West (education); Lesedi Home-based Care of Amalia, North West (We Care Healthcare); the Ratanang Group for Children with Disabilities of Soweto, Gauteng (We Care Disabilities); and Kwa Kedi's Fashion Design in Madikwe, North West (Vukuzenzele Women).

No award was made in the Environmental Waste Management category.

Calls have been made for entries for the sixth annual awards from anyone who has contributed to the wellbeing of his or her community in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland.

The store's club manager, Tessa Lloyd, said: "We send out verification teams to visit all short-listed projects to ensure that we select winners who are genuinely contributing to their communities and have the ability to sustain their commitment."

The Ratanang Group for Children with Disabilities was started in 1994 by a group of women who met at a support group for mothers with children diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

The Happy Day Creche has been offering Jouberton's children in need a safe haven. The creche caters for 190 children.
