University of Limpopo's Professor Phuti Ngoepe has been awarded the 2008 President's Award from the National Research Foundation.
The NRF award acknowledges individuals who have had a direct role in supporting and mentoring, especially black and women scientists to reach international standards. It is focused on transforming the science community to make it more representative of the South African population.
Ngoepe is the director of the Centre for Mining and Materials Modelling and Development, a holder of a Department of Science and Technology-NRF South African research chair in computational modelling of materials at the University of Limpopo and a Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) fellow.
He was recognised for establishing a materials modelling centre at the university.
Ngoepe is excited about his award and proud of his centres' work.
The centre began with modest work stations and has now acquired state-of -the-art facilities that link it to high performance computing facilities.
"We're focused on applications of computational modelling to studies of local prevalent minerals, energy storage devices such as batteries and fuel cells as well as polymers and light and platinum metal alloys," Ngoepe said.
He added that the research centre's research is useful to the country's manufacturing and mining industries and overall economic development.
