Farm figures disputed

The Association for Rural Advancement (Afra) has refuted statistics by the department of labour suggesting that 82 percent of farmers in the province complied with labour laws.

Statistics released by the department's inspectors suggested that 237 of the 290 farms fully complied with labour laws, while only 53 (18 percent) contravened sections of the law.

Page Boikanyo, the department spokesman, said inspectors congratulated most farms for adhering to legislation and for their cooperation during last week's inspections.

"A total of 42 contravention notices were served on farmers who had violated aspects of the Occupational Health and Safety Act."

But Afra spokesman Thabo Manyathi disputed the statistics, calling them a big joke.

"I have visited 20 farms where I found conditions the same, and in some cases, worse."
