Police have arrested four people, including a man and woman they believe are part of a criminal scam syndicate that produces fraudulent payslips, drivers' licences and licence discs.

They also confiscated several memory sticks, a printer, a scanner and four drivers' licences that were ready for collection when they swooped on the house in Umlazi.

Police said the suspected fraudsters also produce payslips from government departments and identity documents to facilitate loans and accounts.

Police spokesman Khephu Ndlovu said police stormed a house in N-section, Umlazi, and discovered a centre where fraudulent documents such as payslips, identity documents and fake temporary drivers' licences are manufactured.

"The fake department of health payslips were allegedly used to secure loans and other credit accounts," he said.

Ndlovu said the breakthrough was made after a tip-off from members of the public about a suspected scam in the area.

"Acting on the tip-off we followed two men after they allegedly bought a fake driver's licence from the 'supplier'.

"Then we caught up with them and made the arrests in Stanger," Ndlovu said.

The two Stanger suspects led the police to a house in Umlazi township south of Durban where police arrested a man and a woman.

All four of the suspects are expected to appear in the Umlazi magistrate's court today.

They are charged with fraud, forgery and possession of fake documents.
