Talented jazz vocalist and trombone player Siya Makuzeni will set Niki's Oasis in Newtown alive tomorrow as part of Women's Day celebrations.
The celebrations start today with Babalwa Mangaliso and Nosisi Mavela wowing the crowd. The artists, who both hail from the Eastern Cape, play a number of musical styles that have a funky twist and a lashing of soothing sounds.
Niki Rwaxa, the organiser of the event, said: "Niki's as a venue is committed to the development and exposure of young South African jazz artists. We aim to invite a number of young women to share the stage with established veterans so that they can learn from them. This will give them much-needed exposure."
Rwaxa said the aim is to provide a platform for young women jazz artists to celebrate their talents and give their music exposure.
She said that they will employ a new concept to the celebrations in an attempt to entertain the audience. Tomorrow Makuzeni will be accompanied on stage by a team that will include Nkanyezi Cele on drums and alto saxophonist Oscar Rachabane.
Rachabane has collaborated with well-known musicians such as Marcus Wyatt, Zim Ngqawana, 340ml, Simphiwe Dana, Tlale Makhene, Themba Mkhize, Greg Georgiades, McCoy Mrubata and Feya Faku.
Makuzeni picked up her weapon of choice (trombone) in 1997 while attending Stirling High School in East London. She later completed a music degree at the Pretoria Technikon Music School.
She has toured and performed around the globe, most notably in Italy where she contributed to the sound track of Forse Dio è Malato.
The artist is sure to introduce South African audiences to new and exciting sounds. This is what veteran alto and tenor saxophonist Mrubata had to say about Makuzeni: "She has the most powerful, sensitive and expressive voice, all rolled into a pocket-sized rocket with attitude." Admission to both events, which start at 8pm, is free.
