Mpumalanga police's flying squad recovered a stolen Land Rover Discovery that was about to cross into Mozambique on Tuesday afternoon.
The interception brings to 56 the number of vehicles recovered along the Mozambique border since June.
The vehicle was stolen in Kempton Park on Tuesday morning. Police on patrol, suspicious of the skinny and dirty driver, stopped him.
"The members of the flying squad doubted that such a man could afford such an expensive vehicle, so they stopped him," Mpumalanga police's organised crime unit spokesman, Superintendent Abie Khoabane, said yesterday.
"He could not explain who the owner of the vehicle was but after checking they discovered that it had been reported stolen in Kempton park earlier that day."
Police later established that the 25-year-old driver was an illegal Mozambican en route to his country with the stolen vehicle.
