Three men suspected of being responsible for a robbery in which a toddler was shot and wounded at a food outlet in Verulam have been arrested.

The one-year-old was caught in the crossfire during a shootout between the robbers and security guards on Monday in the small town on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast. She sustained minor injuries when a stray bullet struck her in the head.

She and one of the security guards were taken to the Osindisweni Hospital, where she was examined and discharged.

Ndwedwe police spokesman Captain S'fundiswa Hlophe said police responded to a request from colleagues to be on the lookout for the suspects.

"Our members spotted a vehicle that fitted the description given to us by Verulam police," Hlophe said.

"They cornered the vehicle in the Ntaphuka area and three suspects, aged between 26 and 31, were arrested. An amount of stained banknotes was recovered.

"Two 9mm pistols with live ammunition and the vehicle allegedly used as a getaway car were also discovered."

He said the suspects were handed over to the organised crime unit and were expected to appear in court soon.

They will face charges of robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The suspects had confronted a security guard when he went into a food outlet to collect money.

The robbers opened fire on the guard in the cash van after his colleague had collected the money.
